In a crucial floor test, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government, led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, fortified its position in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, achieving a comfortable majority with 144 votes. This significant development was made possible by the cross-voting of 25 rebel legislators from the AIADMK party.
Opposition parties, including the DMK, accused the TVK of engaging in horse-trading practices to secure these votes. However, Chief Minister Vijay dismissed these allegations, promising that his government would focus on development rather than political machinations. The TVK's newfound majority exceeded the 118-seat requirement necessary for governance.
The political dynamics saw a mix of support and opposition: the AMMK's lone MLA backed the government, while the DMK and its ally, the DMDK, walked out. Meanwhile, the PMK and BJP abstained. This shift marks a significant moment in Tamil Nadu politics, highlighting the evolving allegiances within state parties.
