ANC Closes Ranks Around Ramaphosa Amid 'Farmgate' Scandal
The 'Farmgate' scandal involving South African President Cyril Ramaphosa sees the ANC backing him as the impeachment process is reinitiated. Despite political pressure, Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula supports Ramaphosa, insisting there's no requirement for his resignation following a constitutional court decision.
In the midst of the 'Farmgate' scandal, the African National Congress (ANC) has demonstrated unity by supporting President Cyril Ramaphosa. The controversy erupted when thieves stole large sums of cash hidden in a sofa at Ramaphosa's ranch.
As the ANC reconvened to address the scandal, Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula rallied behind Ramaphosa, dismissing calls for his resignation as opportunistic. Mbalula emphasized that the constitutional court judgment does not mandate the president's resignation.
Ramaphosa's absence from key meetings permits candid discussions among senior party members. The scandal raises questions about the handling of $580,000, raising scrutiny over the president's anti-corruption credentials despite his promise of integrity upon taking office.
