Latvia's Political Shake-up: Prime Minister Silina Resigns Amidst Growing Pressure
Latvia's Prime Minister Evika Silina has resigned, leading to the collapse of her coalition government. This comes ahead of the October elections. Her government will act as a caretaker until a new leader is appointed. The resignation follows internal political strife and national security concerns.
Latvia's Prime Minister Evika Silina announced her resignation on Thursday, causing the dissolution of her coalition government just months before scheduled elections in October.
Silina, who has held office since 2023, will continue to lead a caretaker government until a new prime minister is appointed. Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics will convene meetings with parliamentary parties on Friday to initiate the selection process for a new leader.
The political turmoil follows heightened security concerns after Ukrainian drones, flying from Russia, entered Latvia's airspace and exploded at an oil facility. Defense Minister Andris Spruds was dismissed for failing to advance effective anti-drone systems, prompting his party to withdraw support for Silina, leading to the government's collapse.
