Nigel Farage Under Investigation for Undeclared Crypto Donation
The UK's Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards is investigating Reform UK leader Nigel Farage for not declaring a £5 million donation from a cryptocurrency donor. Farage argues the gift was personal, not political. If found guilty, he could face suspension from the House of Commons.
The UK Parliamentary watchdog has launched an inquiry into Nigel Farage for failing to declare a substantial monetary gift. The Reform UK leader received a £5 million donation from Christopher Harborne, a billionaire and crypto investor, which he used for personal security before announcing his candidacy in the 2024 national election.
Farage's party maintains that no parliamentary rules were broken, stating the gift was personal. However, rival parties claim this undermines Farage's populist image and exposes his reliance on wealthy backers. If found guilty of breaching disclosure rules, Farage could face suspension, potentially triggering a recall election.
The scrutiny intensifies on Reform UK's funding as they lead national opinion polls, with data revealing that Harborne contributed two-thirds of the party's financial support last year. Despite controversy, the party saw significant gains in local elections, indicating voter support continues.
