The ongoing internal rift within the AIADMK has taken center stage as party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami engaged in crucial discussions with newly appointed district secretaries at his residence on Friday. These talks focused on the party's future strategies following the dismissal of senior leaders like S P Velumani and C Ve Shanmugam.

The rift followed a cross-voting incident during the TVK government's confidence vote on Wednesday, which the ruling party won easily, exacerbating tensions within AIADMK ranks. Presently, Palaniswami enjoys the backing of 22 MLAs, whereas the rebel faction, spearheaded by Velumani and Shanmugam, holds the support of 25 legislators.

Both factions are keen on solidifying their positions and employing legal avenues to exert control over the AIADMK. Sources indicate Velumani and Shanmugam plan to petition the assembly speaker to confirm C Vijayabaskar as the party whip as their faction intensifies efforts to establish dominance.
