Peru's Electoral Authority Vows for Transparency Amid Controversy
Peru's National Elections Board promised to resolve flaws that delayed election results, now aiming for a smoother presidential runoff. Keiko Fujimori and Roberto Sanchez have been declared finalists. The board has enlisted international experts for oversight, amidst fraud allegations from third-placed candidate Rafael Lopez Aliaga, whose party seeks annulment.
The National Elections Board of Peru has pledged to rectify the issues that delayed April's election results by a month. This move comes ahead of the crucial presidential runoff scheduled for June 7. The board has officially announced that right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori and leftist Roberto Sanchez will compete in the final round.
JNE President Roberto Burneo acknowledged logistical challenges during a press conference, particularly highlighting delays in opening polling stations in Lima, which necessitated an additional day for voting. These disruptions sparked allegations of fraud from ultraconservative candidate Rafael Lopez Aliaga, who finished in third place. To ensure smooth proceedings in the second round, a committee comprising national and international experts, including cybersecurity professionals, has been formed.
Lopez Aliaga's party has called for the annulment of the first-round results, describing them as final and unappealable. They claim the election fraud has been executed and refuse to acknowledge results tainted with fraud and corruption, as per Lopez Aliaga's statement on social media platform X.
