The race for Deputy Speaker of the Keralam Legislative Assembly began with a clear contest between the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) and the opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF). Notably absent from casting votes were the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators, who chose to abstain.
The polling process started at 9 a.m. at the State Assembly in Thiruvananthapuram. Shanimol Osman leads the UDF's bid, running against LDF's Muhammed Muhsin. While present in the assembly, BJP members abstained from the voting, remaining seated throughout the proceedings.
This election follows Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar's inaugural policy address of the 16th Keralam Legislative Assembly. His speech, delivered May 29, emphasized economic growth, welfare reforms, and an anti-narcotics campaign without criticizing the Union government. Among the promises detailed are free travel for women on public buses, increased welfare pensions, and interest-free loans for entrepreneurs.
