In a historic election, Shanimol Osman of the United Democratic Front (UDF) was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Keralam Legislative Assembly. She becomes only the fourth woman to hold the post in the state's history, securing victory by defeating the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate Muhammed Muhsin with a wide margin.
The election results were announced by Keralam Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, who reported that Shanimol Osman received 99 votes against Mohammed Muhsin's 34, with four members abstaining from the vote. Notably, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators abstained from voting, choosing to be present but not participate in the electoral process.
This election took place shortly after Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar's policy address for the newly constituted Assembly, which highlighted the UDF government's focus on welfare programs, economic development, and reforms. Shanimol Osman's election coincides with the Congress-led UDF's return to power, marking the start of a new legislative chapter in Keralam under Chief Minister VD Satheesan.
