To counter the threat of Russian drones breaching air defenses over the Black Sea, Ukraine has enlisted the expertise of Charles Maher, a former U.S. submarine commander. His firm, BlueShadow, is collaborating with Ukraine's military to design a fleet of autonomous vessels aimed at safeguarding the coastal city of Odesa.

Maher revealed that four squadrons, each consisting of 12 vessels, will create a maritime perimeter 10 to 12 kilometers offshore. These technology-infused units, equipped with missiles and interceptor drones, are expected to be operational by early 2027.

The project is part of a broader initiative led by Defence Builder, a private sector accelerator dedicated to advancing defense startups in Ukraine. This ecosystem has significantly increased defense investments, with startups like Wingtech and Telearmy innovating in drone and vehicle technologies to bolster front-line defenses.
