Annita Demetriou's Re-Election: A Glimpse into Cyprus's Political Landscape

In a move that could shape the political future of Cyprus, Annita Demetriou was re-elected as the speaker of parliament. This development is seen as a precursor to potential alliances ahead of the 2028 presidential election in the island nation.

Demetriou, a prominent figure of the right-wing Democratic Rally party, secured her position with the backing of various parties. Notably, her support came from her own party, the centrist Democratic Party, which aligns with the current President Nikos Christodoulides, and Direct Democracy, a grassroots faction.

The recent parliamentary elections on May 24 saw the absence of Christodoulides's allied parties, the socialist EDEK and centrist Dipa. As it stands, the Democratic Party remains the sole supporter of the president in the current parliament.
