Cepeda's New Approach: National Reforms Over Assembly

Leftist candidate Ivan Cepeda has shifted his strategy ahead of the June 21 elections, opting for consensus-driven national reforms instead of a radical constitutional assembly. By doing so, he aims to win over centrist voters. His opponent Abelardo De La Espriella, a right-wing candidate, criticizes Cepeda's approach.

Cepeda's New Approach: National Reforms Over Assembly

Colombia's leftist presidential candidate, Ivan Cepeda, announced a revised political strategy in a recent video statement. He aims to focus on building consensus around national reforms if elected in the upcoming election's second round.

Previously, Cepeda advocated for a constituent assembly for comprehensive social reforms, conditional on broad public support, a stance also backed by current President Gustavo Petro. However, he now seeks to attract centrist voters as he competes against right-wing candidate Abelardo De La Espriella.

Cepeda claims a shift towards national agreement follows public reflections and appeals from democratic sectors and human rights advocates. Meanwhile, his opponent, De La Espriella, promises to uphold recent minimum wage increases and maintain existing subsidies.
