Lithuanian Politics: Social Democrats Remove Populist Ally

Lithuania's ruling Social Democrats have removed Nemunas Dawn from their coalition due to its leader's antisemitism conviction. Lithuanian Politics: Social Democrats Remove Populist Ally

The Social Democrat party in Lithuania ousted the populist Nemunas Dawn from its coalition government. The decision follows the sentencing of Nemunas Dawn's leader for antisemitism, casting doubts over the party's role in the coalition.

In efforts to preserve its slight majority in parliament, the Social Democrats plan to replace Nemunas Dawn with the centre-right For Lithuania party. According to Social Democrat leader Mindaugas Sinkevicius, patience ran thin as Nemunas Dawn's chairman increasingly radicalized, necessitating a focus on stability.

The Lithuanian cabinet, also including the Farmers and Greens Union, might see significant shifts. Talks over the future leadership could see Sinkevicius replacing current Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene, amid rising tensions with Russia exacerbated by errant Ukrainian drones.
