The small Northern Irish party supporting the British government would emphatically oppose any scheme to give the devolved assembly in Belfast a way out of a Brexit backstop after a number of years, a senior member of the party said. The Times newspaper reported on Wednesday that the European Union was prepared to give the assembly a say over post-Brexit customs checks on the Irish border, but only via a double majority.

The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) would have an effective veto on post-Brexit customs checks on the Irish border under proposals tabled by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Commenting on Twitter on the Times report, DUP chief whip Jeffrey Donaldson said: "This creates a customs border between Northern Ireland and our biggest market in Great Britain. Economic madness. DUP has been clear in opposition to this. It's the NI only Backstop reheated and represents no real compromise."
