France: willing to consider a Brexit extension, but time alone won't resolve issues
France is prepared to discuss an extension of the Oct. 31 deadline for Britain's departure from the European Union but more time will not itself resolve the issues, Secretary of State for European Affairs Amelie de Montchalin said on Tuesday. "Time alone is not a solution. However, if a significant political change takes place in the UK then that could potentially justify a discussion on an extension if we were asked for it," she told reporters ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg.
"A significant political change is the prospect of an election, a referendum, something that changes the political dynamic so that the triangle between the government, parliament and the British people could align with each other a bit more. We believe that time alone will not solve the complexity of what is at stake." deal, it’s been three years that we work on it. It is desirable for the British, for the EU. We are firm on our principles which are guarantee the peace in Ireland, make sure the single market is protected, and that the future relation will be a balanced one. We must be extremely responsible, very calm, we cannot fall into a sort of generalized panic because the deadlines are looming. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
