Kenya becomes the largest producer and exporter of Avocados in Africa and the sixth largest producer in the world.

Murang'a Governor, Mwangi Wa Iria in conversation with Daily Nation talked about how avocados are given even more preference in the country now than before which was predominantly a producer of coffee.

Avocados have a limitless market in Europe, he remarks and hence there is no chance of a failure in producing a crop like this. Moreover, the country is now concentrating on the devolution of the market to increase production and quality of crops.

He said that they are keener to grow the Hass variety of avocados, as their prices are very high in the foreign markets.

He stresses on the revived condition of the crop after the ban on its exports in January this year with the help of devolution market regulation.

He said that one avocado tree could produce about 1000 fruits a year where the price of a single fruit can go as high as Sh8. Last year alone the farmers earned a total of about Sh500 million from exporting avocados.
