NASA has shared a video of the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter kicking up dust and taking off for its 47th flight on the Red Planet. The video is a stunning display of the rotorcraft's capabilities and also a reminder of the incredible feats of engineering and exploration that humans are capable of achieving.

Ingenuity completed Flight 47 on March 9, during which it travelled 1,443 ft (440 m) across the Martian surface for 146 seconds at a maximum altitude of 40 ft (12 m).

The helicopter has been zipping along with the Perseverance Mars rover as they traverse the Martian terrain. While the rover moves slowly and carefully over the rocky landscape, Ingenuity zips along overhead, performing aerial observations of the rover's science targets, potential routes, and inaccessible features.

Ingenuity has been making headlines since it first made history by achieving the first powered, controlled flight on another planet in April 2021. It was designed to be a technology demonstrator, to prove that it is possible to fly on another planet.

The helicopter was designed to complete only a few flights, but it has long surpassed its intended lifespan. Its success has paved the way for future planetary missions to use similar technology to explore not only Mars but also other planets in our solar system.

Ingenuity will attempt the next flight, Flight 48, no earlier than March 18. It is expected to fly 1,271.7 feet (387.6 meters) northwest to reposition itself and image science targets along the way.
