For the second consecutive month, Jharkhand records surplus rainfall as summer showers for a week helped the state register 37 per cent excess rain in April, a weather official said here on Monday.

Despite parts of Jharkhand facing severe heatwave conditions between April 10 and 21, the state received 27 mm of rain in the last week of the month against the normal rainfall of 19.8 mm, he said.

The wet weather is likely to continue till May 4 and the temperature may again rise from the next day.

This was the second consecutive month when the state received surplus rainfall. In March, the state had registered 33.2 mm of rain against a normal of 14.2 mm, a surplus of 134 per cent.

Jharkhand had faced a 100 per cent rain deficit in November, January and February. The situation was slightly better in December with 96 per cent deficit rainfall.

Nine districts—Garhwa, Palamau, Chatra, Latehar, Ranchi, Khunti, East Singhbhum, Bokaro and Jamatara—have received surplus rains in the range of 71 per cent to 295 per cent in April. Gumla, Ramgar, Dhanbad and Koderma received excess rains between 20 and 59 per cent, according to a weather bulletin.

However, five districts—Godda, Sahibganj, Lohardaga, Dumka and Pakur—have received deficient rains up to 82 per cent.

“Jharkhand might be experiencing inclement weather till May 4. We have also issued Orange Alert for Monday and Tuesday for parts of the state as there is a possibility of hailstorms, thundershowers and strong wind at speed of 40-50 kmph,” Ranchi Meteorological Centre in-charge Abhishek Anand told PTI.

Jharkhand has been experiencing pleasant weather for more than a week due to intermittent rains, which brought down the maximum temperature from three to 10 degrees Celsius from normal.
