NASA's Curiosity Mars rover, known for its groundbreaking discoveries on the Red Planet, uses tiny brooms to sweep away dust from rocks before conducting scientific analysis.

Dubbed the Dust Removal Tool, the mini cleaner is a motorized, wire-bristle brush on the turret at the end of its robotic arm.

These mini brooms play a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness of the rock surfaces. With Mars being a dusty planet, it becomes imperative to clear away the accumulated dust that may obscure valuable scientific observations. The brooms are designed to gently brush away the fine Martian dust, providing the rover with unobstructed access to the rocks it intends to study.

The close-up image of Curiosity's cleaning apparatus shared by NASA offers a glimpse into the intricate tools employed for its vital dust removal tasks. These detailed snapshots not only serve as a visual treat for space enthusiasts but also provide the rover's team on Earth with valuable insights into the performance and condition of these specialized instruments. The agency periodically monitors the cleaning tools to ensure their continued effectiveness.

The Curiosity rover, which landed on the Red Planet in August 2012, has been instrumental in expanding our knowledge of our celestial neighbour. Over the years, it has examined Martian rocks, soil samples, and the planet's atmosphere, providing invaluable data for scientists and paving the way for future missions.
