On September 12, 1951, a 6-magnitude earthquake had struck the Chamba-Udhampur area on the border of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The area witnessed a earthquake of the same magnitude on June 17, 1962, according to records. In 2004, Himachal Pradesh's Bharmaur area was struck by a 5.1-magnitude earthquake.

Mild tremors were also felt in other parts of Himachal Pradesh and even in Chandigarh and parts of Punjab and Haryana.

''I felt a strong jolt lasting a couple of seconds. Just when I was thinking of rushing downstairs, the tremors stopped,'' said Sanjay Kumar, a Chandigarh resident.
