Global Weather Shift: From El Niño to La Niña
The 2023/24 El Niño event that fueled record-high temperatures and extreme weather is expected to transition to La Niña conditions later this year, as per the World Meteorological Organization. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has predicted a significant weather transition for 2023/24, with the ongoing El Niño event, which sparked record-breaking temperatures globally, set to shift to La Niña conditions.
The past 13 months have seen unprecedented sea surface temperatures and the warmest April on record, driven by the natural El Niño phenomenon and exacerbated by greenhouse gases.
This changing climate pattern is crucial for regions like South Asia. Millions in India and Pakistan faced extreme heat in April and May, but the expected La Niña conditions might bring above-normal monsoon rains, essential for agriculture and water supplies. The chance of La Niña increases to 60% in July-September and 70% in August-November, according to the WMO.
