The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) has issued a warning to the public in the south coast of the province about level 4 disruptive rains, which have the potential to result in a disaster.

As per the South African Weather Service's predictions, the level 4 alert signifies persistent rainfall expected over the south-eastern parts of the province from Sunday night until Monday midnight. This rainfall may lead to flooding of roads and settlements, as well as damage to infrastructure and mud-based houses.

The weather service cautioned that this weather system will bring widespread showers and rain across the province, with rainfall accumulation of at least 40mm expected along the south coast, which could have significant impacts.

The department identified areas likely to be affected, including Ray Nkonyeni, Umdoni, Umuziwabantu, and Umzumbe Local Municipalities.

In response, disaster teams have been activated in all municipalities expected to be affected during this period. The department advised communities to seek shelter in safe places, with public facilities like community halls being open as safe havens for those in need of shelter.

Furthermore, the department may need to evacuate people if they foresee a high risk of danger due to the inclement weather. Motorists are strongly urged to avoid traveling during this period, as flooded bridges could pose a risk to life.

It's essential for residents to heed these warnings and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and well-being during this period of disruptive rains.
