Delhi Faces Severe Waterlogging Due to Canal Breach

A breach in the Munak Canal supplying water from Haryana to Delhi caused significant waterlogging in the Bawana area. Residents faced inconvenience due to knee-and waist-deep water. Authorities are working alongside multiple departments to control the situation and commence repair work, which is expected to take 24-48 hours.

A breach in a canal that supplies water from Haryana to Delhi led to knee-deep waterlogging in several parts of the Bawana area, stranding residents in their homes, police reported.

The water from Munak Canal's barrage entered the J, K, and L blocks of the colony in northwest Delhi early Thursday, causing significant inconvenience and concern for the locals. Multiple videos on social media showed people wading through waist-deep water, carrying cylinders and supporting each other. 'We have informed all concerned departments, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Flood Control Department, Public Welfare Department, and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), at midnight,' an official stated. Flow of water from Sonipat has reduced, and authorities have requested Haryana to close gates on the canal. The canal originates from the Yamuna river in Munak, Haryana.

Navin Dahiya, a resident of the JJ colony, mentioned that repair work will commence once the water flow is controlled. 'Sandbags are prepared to be placed once the water stops, which will take 24 to 48 hours to fix,' he noted. Delhi Water Minister Atishi posted about the incident on X, stating that the Delhi Jal Board is working in close coordination with the Haryana Irrigation Department. Water diversion to another sub-branch of the canal is underway. Atishi and BJP MP Yogender Chandoliya, who also visited the affected areas, indicated that repair efforts would impact water availability for Delhi residents.
