Bihar Braces as Rainfall Swells Rivers: Authorities on High Alert

The Bihar government has urged district administrations to remain vigilant as continuous rainfall has increased water levels in several rivers. Disaster Management Department led a virtual review, emphasizing preparedness. With rivers like Gandak and Burhi Gandak nearing danger marks, locals in vulnerable areas have been relocated. Authorities have also opened barrage gates to manage water discharge.

The Bihar government has issued a high alert for district administrations following continuous rainfall that has elevated water levels in several rivers. This vigilance comes as the state's Disaster Management Department (DMD) spearheaded a virtual review meeting, assessing the situation across various districts.

During the meeting, DMD Additional Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit instructed officials to stay alert and prepare for potential escalations in water levels. Although officials from the Water Resources Department (WRD) have stated there is no alarming situation so far, rivers are rising and inundating low-lying areas.

Significant concerns have been raised in districts like East Champaran, Gopalganj, and West Champaran, where rivers such as Gandak and Burhi Gandak are either above or nearing their danger levels. Regional local administrations have begun relocating residents from vulnerable low-lying areas as a precautionary measure. Additionally, authorities have opened gates at Valmikinagar and Kosi Birpur barrages to manage water discharge effectively.
