Tragedy in Poland: Earth Tremor Claims One Miner, Another Still Trapped

An earth tremor in southern Poland has resulted in the death of one miner, while another remains trapped underground. PGG, the mine's owner, reported that the incident affected the Rydultowy mine at a depth of 1,200 meters. Efforts are underway to rescue the trapped miner.

One miner died and one remains trapped underground after an earth tremor hit a pit in southern Poland, according to mine owner PGG on Thursday evening.

Earlier reports indicated that one miner was being brought to the surface, though no details on his condition were provided. Approximately 76 miners have been rescued and brought to the surface, with 17 taken to nearby hospitals, including one in serious condition, said PGG CEO Leszek Pietraszek during a televised news conference.

The tremor occurred at around 0600 GMT at a depth of about 1,200 meters (3,960 feet) below ground at the Rydultowy mine, stated PGG spokesperson Aleksandra Wysocka-Siembiga.
