In response to a flood alert affecting the Upper Nile region and the five counties of Jonglei State, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the Jonglei Government have engaged with the Duk County community to raise awareness and discuss strategies to mitigate the risk of flash floods.

Paramount Chief Deng Mabur emphasized the need for government and humanitarian partners to address the social challenges posed by climate change. The community meeting, led by Geetha Pious, Head of UNMISS's Field Office in Bor, brought together local authorities, youths, and women's representatives, who shared their concerns and discussed necessary measures.

With large areas of Duk County at risk of flooding, immediate priorities include protecting the airstrip, constructing dykes, and prepositioning essential supplies such as light shelter materials. Ensuring availability of medication for malaria and snake bites was also highlighted as crucial.

Ms. Pious noted, "The task of constructing dykes primarily falls to the government and humanitarian agencies. However, UNMISS is committed to providing support where feasible. Our focus is on conflict prevention at relocation points through awareness campaigns in less vulnerable areas."

The state authorities expressed their gratitude for the logistical support and assistance from UNMISS. James Mawich Makuach, Deputy Chairperson of the Jonglei High Committee on Flood Management, reported, "We have completed our initial mission to visit the counties. We have documented the community's concerns, drafted a comprehensive action plan, and allocated resources for flood mitigation."

This collaborative effort underscores a commitment to proactive measures and community engagement in the face of climate-related challenges.
