Torrential Rains Trigger Wide-Scale Flooding and Rescues in Thane District

Heavy rains caused severe flooding in Thane district, necessitating evacuations and rescue operations. Ambernath was particularly affected, with elderly residents and children moved to safer locations. Authorities are on high alert as water levels surpass danger marks in several dams and rivers, leading to road closures and infrastructure damage.

Heavy rains battered Thane district on Thursday, causing widespread flooding and triggering urgent rescue operations in Ambernath and other areas. The district recorded 138 mm of rainfall between 8 am and 1 pm, with the season’s total reaching 1,424 mm, according to a civic official.

In Ambernath, rescue efforts saw 18 elderly residents of Sahavas old age home relocated to upper floors at another old age home in Maher, and 30 children and staff from Satkarma ashram were shifted to Pragati Andha Vidyalaya. Additionally, 200 people were evacuated to the BSUP building and 40 families comprising 156 individuals were moved in Kalyan as a precaution.

Water levels exceeded the danger mark in Badlapur barrage, Jambul dam, Mohane dam, and Ulhas river, according to reports. Flood alerts were issued for various villages in Kalyan, Ambernath, Ulhasnagar, and Bhiwandi talukas. With water storage in Tansa dam reaching 99.18 percent capacity, nearby villages were put on high alert. Infrastructural damage included submerged roads and bridges, prompting the suspension of movement in specific areas. Two NDRF teams have been deployed to assist with ongoing rescue and relief operations.
