A 52-year-old woman died and her son sustained injuries on Monday when the roof of their dilapidated home collapsed amid heavy rains in Ujjain city, authorities said.

The tragic incident took place in Amarpura, Ujjain, where Rahisa Bi and her 26-year-old son Haider were conversing when their house’s roof came crashing down, confirmed Kharakuan police station officer Madhu Bala to PTI.

Emergency services swiftly removed the debris, transporting the victims to the hospital where Rahisa was declared dead on arrival. Haider, suffering a head injury, is currently receiving medical treatment.

A police case has been filed, and investigations are ongoing.

Ujjain recorded 34 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, accumulating 384 mm since June 1, according to local authorities.

Intermittent heavy showers lashed various parts of Madhya Pradesh. Mandsaur received 165 mm of rainfall, prompting authorities to partially open sluice gates of 11 dams.

The meteorological department forecasts continued heavy rains in seven districts including Ujjain. The total rainfall across Madhya Pradesh has exceeded normal levels by 10% since June.
