The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India have entered into a $200 million loan agreement aimed at improving solid waste management and sanitation services in 100 cities across eight states.

The agreement, part of the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 - Comprehensive Municipal Waste Management in Indian Cities Program, was signed by Juhi Mukherjee, Joint Secretary from the Finance Ministry, and Mio Oka, Country Director for ADB's India Resident Mission. This initiative is designed to bolster the Swachh Bharat Mission - Urban 2.0 by upgrading existing infrastructure and implementing new technologies.

Mio Oka highlighted that the program would leverage ADB's extensive experience and international best practices to promote a cleaner, garbage-free environment. This includes the establishment of bio-methanation plants, composting facilities, and material recovery plants. Additionally, community toilets and urinals will be constructed, focusing on climate resilience and gender equality. The program also aims to build the capacity of local urban bodies, facilitate peer-to-peer learning, and actively engage with the private sector. Annual reviews and progress updates will ensure the continued effectiveness of the city-wide waste and sanitation plans.
