Jayan, a resident of the landslide-hit Chooralmala in Kerala, was abruptly awakened in his home on the night of July 29. As torrential rains battered Wayanad's Chooralmala, Jayan heard a loud noise around 1.30 am and rushed outside to see flood waters gushing by, with people screaming for help.

Without power or light, Jayan watched helplessly as slush and rapid water flow hindered rescue efforts. The middle-aged man, stressed and weary, recounted the night's events, describing the destruction that followed a second, louder noise at 3.30 am, which took away homes and lives in an instant.

Jayan, with 11 members of his wife's family missing, continued his desperate search, managing only to recover a few bodies. His solemn vigil, along with others in the devastated area, symbolizes the harrowing blend of despair and hope as rescue operations continue.
