Tragedy in Chhattisgarh: Man Trampled by Wild Elephant

A 55-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Chhattisgarh's Jashpur district. The incident occurred late Wednesday night when a tusker entered Dumardand village, damaging houses. The victim, Jagarnath, managed to save his family but couldn't escape himself. Human-elephant conflicts remain a significant issue in the region.

A 55-year-old man was tragically trampled to death by a wild elephant in the Jashpur district of Chhattisgarh, according to forest department officials.

The incident occurred in Dumardand village late Wednesday night when a tusker separated from its herd and entered the village, causing significant damage to mud houses.

Jagarnath, the victim, managed to evacuate his family to a safe location but could not escape the elephant himself. The pachyderm caught him with its trunk and trampled him to death. Forest officials sent his body for post-mortem and provided immediate relief of Rs 25,000 to his family.

The elephant destroyed 10 to 12 non-cemented houses in the village. Human-elephant conflicts have been a growing concern in the state's northern districts including Surguja, Jashpur, Raigarh, and Korba, where over 300 people have died in elephant attacks over the past five years.
