Russia's Eastern Onslaught Intensifies: Civilians Flee Amid Heavy Bombardment
Russian forces have intensified their assaults on Ukraine's strategic eastern hub of Pokrovsk, leading to significant territorial gains for Moscow. The escalating conflict has caused a surge in civilian evacuations as incessant airstrikes and infantry attacks stretch Ukrainian defenses thin. Ukrainian officials and analysts highlight the severe challenges faced by the Ukrainian defenders and the critical role of Russian warplanes in these advances.
Russian assaults are intensifying pressure on the strategic eastern logistics hub of Pokrovsk, Ukraine announced on Friday. Waves of guided bombs and infantry attacks have resulted in some of Moscow's most substantial territorial gains since the spring.
The offensive has triggered a significant increase in civilians fleeing the area, with evacuation requests escalating approximately tenfold over the past two weeks. Russian forces have been making steady advances on several fronts in the eastern Donetsk region, particularly around Pokrovsk, where Ukrainian troops are stretched thin 29 months into Russia's full-scale invasion.
Russian gains totaling around 57 square kilometers (22 square miles) in a week are the third largest since April, analyst Pasi Paroinen of the Black Bird Group told Reuters. Warplanes and artillery support waves of infantry assaults, according to Ruslan Muzychuk, spokesperson for Ukraine's National Guard. The heavy bombings by Russian warplanes pose a significant threat, especially on the Pokrovsk and Toretsk fronts.
