Torrential Rains Trigger Devastating Landslides and Floods Across Southern China

Severe landslides and flooding have claimed over 150 lives in southern China in the last two months due to relentless rainstorms. Recent catastrophes in the Tibetan area of Sichuan and other provinces have highlighted the urgent need for disaster preparedness amid increasingly frequent extreme weather patterns.

In southern China, relentless rainstorms have led to landslides and floods, killing more than 150 people in the past two months. The most recent disaster occurred early Saturday in Sichuan province's mountainous Tibetan area, resulting in eight deaths and 19 people missing, as reported by state media.

The early morning calamity devastated homes and claimed at least six lives in the village of Ridi, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. Two more people perished, and eight remain missing after a bridge collapsed, causing four vehicles to plummet.

China is currently in its peak flood season from mid-July to mid-August. Policymakers have repeatedly stressed the necessity of improving disaster readiness as extreme weather events become more frequent. Historical data indicates a rise in extreme precipitation and heat, as per a government climate report.
