A 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck Jordan and Syria late Monday, as confirmed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). Residents across both countries, as well as Lebanon, felt the quake's tremors.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), according to GFZ. While initially reported as having a magnitude of 5.46, it was later downgraded. Syria's state news agency confirmed the quake's epicenter was near the city of Hama.
The northern Syrian city of Azaz witnessed immediate flashbacks to the devastating 2023 earthquake that claimed thousands of lives in northern Syria and Turkey. Syrian civil defense forces, operating in opposition-held areas, were deployed to respond to any emergencies but reported no damage thus far.
