Greece's Devastating Wildfire Ravages Athens' Outskirts

Greece's worst wildfire of the year, fueled by strong winds and extreme heat, claimed one life and continued to burn near Athens. Firefighters battled the blaze, which devastated homes, vehicles, and forestlands, causing widespread evacuations. Climate change and a particularly hot, dry summer have exacerbated the wildfire risk.

A deadly wildfire, the worst Greece has seen this year, has claimed one life and continues to spread in the outskirts of Athens, despite firefighters making headway with the help of lighter winds. The fire, which ignited on Sunday near Varnavas village, has incinerated homes, vehicles, and vast forested areas.

By Monday, the strong winds had driven the flames from the wooded hills into suburban areas, enveloping the city in smoke and ash, causing panic among residents. The blaze reached Vrilissia, a mere 14 km from central Athens, resulting in the death of one person, authorities confirmed.

The fire's cause remains undetermined; however, forecasted high winds and soaring temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) will keep the region on high fire alert until Thursday. This disaster highlights the severe impact of climate change, with Greece experiencing its hottest winter and summer on record, promoting rampant wildfires.

Evacuations have been widespread, displacing residents and forcing the closure of more than 30 areas and hospitals. The European Civil Protection Mechanism has been activated, with aid dispatched from France, Italy, and the Czech Republic, while Spain and Turkey have also offered their assistance.
