Heavy Rainfall and Low-Pressure System Batter Odisha

Heavy rainfall affected Odisha on Friday due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. The weather office forecasted more rain in the coming days. The Special Relief Commissioner advised district collectors to prepare for potential flooding and ensure drains and stormwater channels were clear.

Heavy rainfall lashed parts of Odisha on Friday as a low-pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal, officials reported. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated the low-pressure area emerged Friday morning under the influence of cyclonic circulation over South Bangladesh and adjacent Gangetic West Bengal.

The associated cyclonic circulation extended up to mid-tropospheric levels and tilted southwestwards, according to the weather office. “It is likely to become more marked and move west-northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand in the next 2-3 days,” the IMD forecasted.

The Met office also predicted heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places in Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, and Cuttack.

Odisha’s Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has noted the possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in areas like Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, and Kendrapara, potentially inundating low-lying areas. The SRC advised district collectors to keep the administrative machinery ready for any eventuality, ensuring that drains and stormwater channels are cleared and adequate pumps are in place as needed.
