Kerala High Court Calls for Immediate Action After Wayanad Landslides

In the wake of the catastrophic landslides in Wayanad, which claimed over 200 lives, the Kerala High Court has condemned the incident as a consequence of human ''apathy and greed.'' The court emphasized that warning signs had long been ignored in the pursuit of economic development.
Justice A K Jayasankaran Nambiar and Syam Kumar V M stressed the urgency of taking corrective measures, noting that neglect could have severe future consequences. The court initiated a PIL to push for a review of state policies on sustainable development and ecological preservation.
The bench announced a three-stage approach, including gathering scientific data, monitoring rescue operations, and involving local communities in policy reformulation. Affidavits from state and central governments regarding disaster management measures and funding are expected within three weeks.
