Weeks of severe flooding in Nigeria have resulted in the tragic loss of nearly 200 lives and the destruction of countless homes and farmlands, according to the country's disaster management agency. This calamity further threatens the food supply, particularly in the severely affected northern regions.
The National Emergency Management Agency reported that 185 people have died and 208,000 have been displaced across 28 of Nigeria's 36 states. Critics blame poor infrastructure and badly maintained dams for the disaster, prompting frantic evacuation efforts to makeshift shelters.
The floods this year are attributed more to human activities than abnormal rainfall. As floodwaters move southwards, authorities urgently call for evacuations in vulnerable areas to prevent further loss of life. The ongoing flooding crisis has already destroyed 107,000 hectares of farmland, adding to Nigeria's food insecurity woes.
