Typhoon Yagi Downgraded, Leaves Trail of Destruction in Vietnam

Typhoon Yagi, Asia's most powerful storm this year, has been downgraded to a tropical depression as it moved westward, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake in northern Vietnam. The meteorological agency issued the downgrade but warned of continuing risks of flooding and landslides.

In Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, Yagi caused power and telecommunications disruptions, extensive flooding, and considerable damage. Thousands of trees were uprooted, and homes damaged, resulting in the deaths of 18 people, with many still missing at sea. The storm impacted other regions prior, causing fatalities in Hainan, China, and the Philippines.

Industrial hubs in Haiphong suffered significant damage with factories losing roofs and facades, and telecommunications networks still down, delaying assessments. State media reported severe disruptions in northern highways due to flooding and landslides. Recovery efforts are underway as winds subside, with focus on clearing streets and restoring essential services in affected regions.
