California Sues ExxonMobil Over Alleged Plastic Waste Deception
California has sued ExxonMobil, accusing the oil giant of misleading the public about the effectiveness of recycling technologies and its role in plastic waste pollution. The lawsuit follows a two-year investigation into Exxon's practices and aims to secure penalties and an abatement fund for environmental damages caused by plastics pollution.
California has filed a lawsuit against ExxonMobil, alleging the oil giant's involvement in global plastic waste pollution. Speaking at Climate Week in New York City, Attorney General Rob Bonta revealed the findings of a nearly two-year investigation, accusing Exxon of misleading the public about the limitations of recycling technologies.
Bonta specifically highlighted Exxon's promotion of 'advanced recycling' technology that turns hard-to-recycle plastic into fuel, labeling its slow progress as deceptive. 'Today's lawsuit shows the fullest picture to date of ExxonMobil's decades-long deception,' Bonta stated, seeking an abatement fund and civil penalties for California.
ExxonMobil rebutted, claiming that 'advanced recycling is a real solution,' and accused California of failing to advance recycling initiatives. The lawsuit precedes key global plastic treaty negotiations, with environmental groups lauding the move for highlighting the inefficacies of current recycling methods.
