Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli announced on Tuesday that more than 4,000 people have been rescued, while 24 remain missing due to rain-induced floods and landslides, which have claimed 224 lives. Addressing a press conference at Singha Durbar, Oli highlighted the government's full-capacity operational response during the natural disaster. Chief Secretary Eaknarayan Aryal provided an official statement confirming the toll and the scale of the rescue efforts.
According to Home Ministry spokesperson Rishiram Tiwari, nearly 900 people, including foreign trekkers, were airlifted from affected areas in the past two days. Nepal Army helicopters rescued 683 individuals, with operations still ongoing. Private helicopters also played a significant role in the rescue missions, particularly focusing on stranded foreigners in mountainous regions, though exact numbers remain unclear.
The disaster began on Thursday and caused widespread destruction across multiple provinces until Sunday, displacing thousands. Improved weather from Sunday offered some relief, especially in Kathmandu, which was severely affected with over 50 deaths. Over 20,000 security personnel have been mobilized for rescue and relief operations, while efforts to clear blocked roadways continue. Scientists point to climate change and unplanned constructions on floodplains as contributing factors to the severity of the floods.
