Controversial Waste Disposal Operation Begins in Pithampur

The unloading of 337 tonnes of hazardous waste from the defunct Union Carbide factory in Bhopal began at an incineration facility in Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh, on Thursday. Adhering to safety protocols, local officials and representatives supervised the process, which has not yet progressed to burning.

Earlier in January, Pithampur experienced demonstrations opposing the waste disposal, with protestors citing potential dangers to public health and environmental safety. Officials firmly state that activities are limited to unloading and dismiss any claims that incineration has started.

Pithampur SDM Pramod Singh Gujar reinforced the transparency of the operation, urging against spreading false information. Meanwhile, protests continue, including a symbolic 'shavasana' demonstration opposing the waste's presence in Dhar district.
