Britain is set to appoint a commissioner to handle compensation for Caribbean migrants wrongfully detained and deported during the Windrush scandal, as announced by the interior ministry on Thursday.

The infamous Windrush scandal, which emerged in 2018, exposed the mistreatment of Caribbean migrants who arrived between 1948 and 1971. Strict immigration policies denied them basic rights despite decades-long residency, leading to numerous unjust deportations.

The newly established Windrush Commissioner role, promising an annual salary of 130,000 pounds, aims to work with the Windrush Unit to advise the government on compensating victims and instill long-term cultural change.
