Govt Declares Medium-Scale Adverse Event as Drought Intensifies in Taranaki

The New Zealand government has officially classified drought conditions in Taranaki as a medium-scale adverse event, highlighting the increasingly difficult circumstances facing farmers and growers in the region.

"Conditions on the ground are becoming extremely difficult," McClay said. "Taranaki is experiencing persistent dry weather, and we recognize the toll this is taking on the farming community."

To provide immediate relief, the government has allocated $30,000 to rural support groups actively assisting farmers. McClay also emphasized that the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is closely monitoring the situation across the country to assess the need for further intervention.

Rural Communities Minister Mark Patterson acknowledged the ongoing challenges and reiterated the government's commitment to supporting affected farmers and growers.

"MPI has been working alongside sector groups, regional authorities, and farmers to offer additional resources and guidance," Patterson said. "Our teams have been attending farmer meetings in southern and coastal Taranaki to discuss practical strategies for coping with the drought."

The official classification of the drought as a medium-scale adverse event unlocks additional government support, including potential tax relief measures. Additionally, the Ministry of Social Development may now assess applications for Rural Assistance Payments to help those in financial distress.
