At least 15 individuals have lost their lives due to the wildfires engulfing South Korea's southeastern region, according to reports from Yonhap News Agency on Wednesday. The fires, which began on Tuesday, have led to widespread evacuations and destruction of neighborhoods, prompting authorities to transfer thousands of inmates from nearby prisons.
South Korea's Acting President, Han Duck-soo, assured citizens of immediate action, including the deployment of firefighting helicopters and ground personnel to combat the fires intensified by strong winds and dry weather. Tragically, some casualties occurred during escapes when vehicles overturned, as reported by Yonhap.
Despite these efforts, the wildfires, which started last Saturday, remain uncontrolled, having destroyed ancient temples and numerous homes. The government has declared the region a special disaster zone to facilitate urgent aid and recovery efforts.
