Boosting Irrigation: 'Har Khet Ko Pani' Revives Water Capacity

The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana-Har Khet Ko Pani scheme has enhanced 1.20 lakh hectares of irrigation potential and restored 191 million cubic metres of water storage in India. The initiative, part of efforts by the Jal Shakti Ministry, aims to revive traditional water infrastructure and combat climate challenges.

The Central government's Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana-Har Khet Ko Pani has successfully enhanced the irrigation potential across 1.20 lakh hectares and restored 191 million cubic metres of water storage nationwide, the Jal Shakti Ministry announced on Thursday.

Addressing the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Raj Bhushan Choudhary, emphasized the initiative's dual objective: reviving India's traditional water infrastructure while building resilience against increasing water stress and climate variability.

The scheme includes various activities such as desilting, repairing canals and bunds, renovating sluices and weirs, catchment treatment, developing command areas, and controlling erosion, according to Choudhary.
