Feeding Frenzy: Maharashtra's Pigeon Problem

The closure of pigeon feeding sites, or 'kabutarkhanas,' in Mumbai has generated controversy. The sites were shut down by the Maharashtra government amid health concerns, following a Bombay High Court ruling. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is calling for a reevaluation of the state's decision to abruptly shut down pigeon feeding sites, or 'kabutarkhanas,' across Mumbai. This move follows criticism of the government's initial closure in response to a July 30 Bombay High Court ruling deeming such feeding spots a public nuisance that endangers public health.

In response to this court decision, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) implemented strict measures, including covering iconic sites like the Dadar Kabutarkhana to prevent public access. The city's civic body has already fined 142 individuals for defying the ban, collecting Rs 68,700. However, Fadnavis now advocates for a "controlled feeding" approach to address backlash while maintaining public safety.

Tensions remain high as members of the Jain community recently protested the tarpaulin barriers at the Dadar site, resulting in a clash with police. The situation highlights the cultural and health considerations entangled in this issue, as the government aims to balance enforcement with sensitivity to community concerns.
