In response to relentless wildfires during a scorching heatwave, Spain is sending 500 more soldiers to battle the sprawling flames that have engulfed parched woodlands. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed this move on Sunday as regions, notably Galicia, struggle to control the forest fires.

Firefighters are actively tackling 12 major blazes near Ourense in Galicia, with authorities conducting evacuations and imposing lockdowns to protect homes under threat. AEMET, Spain's national weather agency, warned that temperatures could hit a sizzling 45 degrees Celsius, aggravating the wildfire peril.

Amid this crisis, Spain braces for aircraft help from France, Italy, and the Netherlands under a European cooperation pact. Portugal and other European countries are similarly strained, highlighting the critical need for international firefighting collaboration amidst Europe’s warming climate.
