For the first time since India gained independence, a remote hamlet in Shahapur taluka of Maharashtra's Thane district is witnessing the glow of electric light, ending a 78-year-long era of darkness. The electrification of Varaswadi has sparked an overwhelming wave of joy among its predominantly tribal residents.

A senior official from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL or Mahavitaran) confirmed the installation of a 63 KVA transformer in Varaswadi, which became operational on September 18. This milestone supplies power to the local homes and street lights for the first time, bringing a significant transformation to the settlement.

Residents celebrated with great enthusiasm, bursting crackers and cheering as their homes illuminated. Thanks to a dedicated tribal organization's campaign initiated in 2020, this change is expected to drive village development and improve educational opportunities for children, as noted by local resident Rama Aghan.
