Recorded at 251.4 mm, the deluge marked the third-highest September rainfall for the city in nearly fifty years, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Some areas reported even higher figures, exacerbating the city's crisis as thousands of commuters found themselves stranded.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee labeled the situation 'unprecedented' and criticized poor dredging and utility company lapses. Authorities declared holidays for schools and advised office-going residents to stay home, while transport services across roads, railways, and flights remained severely impeded.
