Human Rights Watch has accused the Israeli military of deploying white phosphorus munitions over the southern Lebanese town of Yohmor, threatening civilian lives, according to a report released on Monday.

The rights group confirmed seeing visual evidence of white phosphorus used in the residential area, although Reuters was not able to independently verify the claims. The Israeli military stated it was unaware and could not confirm the use of such munitions.

The use of airburst white phosphorus over populated areas is deemed unlawful under international humanitarian law. Despite the allegations, nearly 400 people have been killed, and many have been displaced as Israeli strikes continue on Lebanon.
